I SEE LONDON.                       I SEE FRANCE.

After dreaming of countless possibilities, combing over dozens of destinations and swooning over, literally, hundreds of Google Images to see what really spoke to me, I finally made my choice… I’m going to England!!  Once I really narrowed down the focus on where I wanted to go I realized I’ve been dreaming of visiting England since I was a girl.  I was swept away by the works of Jane Austen, by watching A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim, and with Merle Oberon & Sir Laurence Olivier in Wuthering Heights (Which, much to my horror, I recently discovered was filmed… are you ready?? …in Thousand Oaks, CA just outside of LA!!  That’s right… In the 1931 film version of Emily Brontë's tale of ultimate jealousy and woe, our Kathy & Heathcliff were writhing in emotional pain, NOT on the misty moors of Yorkshire, but somewhere near the Canejo Grade… NOOOO!!!  OMG, I can’t even talk about it!).  Regardless, England has everything I’m looking for; history, culture, castles… I mean, I don't know about you but THIS American girl wants to see castles... and plenty of 'em!! London Bridge, Abbey Road, The Cotwolds, Downton Abbey, Nottingham, West End theaters, and, of course, the Moors (the REAL ones)!!  I’m already breathless and I haven’t even left the ground!!   Additionally, and on a very personal level, my dear Nana and, thusly, my beloved Mother, were of English decent.  We grew up drinking tea with our Nana and the women in my family have gone to afternoon tea everywhere from the grand rooms at the Four Seasons with it's fine china and crisp white linen to charming, hidden, one room, village tea houses with their collections of antique mismatched cups… It’s a family tradition that is near and dear to my heart.  So England it is!!   As a bonus, there is no real language barrier… after all, I know that “jumper” means “sweater” so I’m good, right?  RIGHT!!

After I made my choice I was excitedly sharing my upcoming adventure with a friend and she said “Oh you’re going to love it!  And once you’re over there you can travel around so easily… you can hop on a train in London and be in Paris in a couple of hours.” In fact once I started to talk to people about my trip I found a lot of their sentences began with “Once you’re over there…”  all of them recommending that  I see as much as is reasonable and  stay as long as I’m able.  Now I knew about traveling by train in the UK and Europe, of course, but somehow when my friend said it a seed was planted and the wheels started turning...   I made a few Google searches... and I soon began to feel like Macauley Culkin in Home Alone... you know,  when he awakens that first morning and begins the process of realization:  “I made my family disappear” but, instead, I was thinking:  “I can go to Paris??”………..  “I can go to Paris.”….............. “I CAN GO TO PARIS!!!!   I figured out my dates, booked a ticket and I’m happy to report,  I will be taking the Eurostar from  London to Paris!!   My list for choosing Paris is short and to the point:

1)  Ummmm, Hello!?!  It’s PARIS!!!

‘Nuff said!

I’ve not yet purchased my return train ticket to London... But that, my friends, is a story for an upcoming post ;)

So where will you go on your dream trip?  What do you know of England and Paris??   Comment below!!  I SO want to hear your stories!! ~Amie~

Oh Amie I am so happy for you. Would you ever think of writing an "armchair "travel book for the rest of us? You really need to think about that. You so effortlessly put your thoughts together. I love reading about it through your eyes of optimism and humor! Backing you 100%.

Loved Paris and will one day return! Wish I had seen the English countryside as opposed to just London. Have an amazing trip!

Getting to see a lot of Paris & have just gotten an opportunity to see a bit more of France and I'm so, SOOO excited!!! I'll have more details in the next few posts!! Where in England will you explore should you go back? Do you have any "must see's" in Paris??

We've gotten some wonderful tips & suggestions from Jessica for London & Paris!! They're so great I'm passing them along:

Yay!!!!

Paris - My personal favorite contemporary art experience - Au Palais de Tokyo - it's open very late, their exhibits are really interesting, and their outdoor restaurant is fantastic. Obviously, the Eiffel Tower, but go late at night, and at the top of the hour - it's truly magical. Take a boat tour of the Seine River - you will see other attractions from the cruise that may catch your eye. Beware of tourist trap restaurants in Paris - there are a ton and they are not good.

London - Tate Museum, Tower Castle, The Eye, Kew Gardens, Coventry Garden, St. Paul's Cathedral

Frommer's guides are super useful. Also, I used Travel Advisor to book my hotels in both places and was not disappointed.

Have fun!!!!!!

Thank you Jessica!! I REALLY can't wait to check some of these out!! I'm already planning a cruise on the Seine & the Eiffel Tower! I'm also told to avoid the elevator & take the stairs! The Tower of London is VERY high on my list as well!! Thank you so much!! Amie

Hello dear Amie, such a great choice!! I used to work as a tour guide in Paris for 6.5yrs while studying at uni, so if you want a few more ideas, let's Skype one day!! Off the cuff: make sure to include the surroundings: Versailles castle and town market on a market day, Fontainebleau castle (sweet country town), and Jean Claude Monet's house & sea lily gardens in Giverny (70km outside Paris). For arts, my favourites are the Picasso museum and the Musee d'Orsay, for impressionists.
And for an amazing shopping location: galleries Lafayette - the main building has an old coloured glass ceiling that's more spectacular than most churches...
But more important than anything: leave time to just get lost in the streets and explore the atmosphere. Best areas for that: Quartier Latin, St. Germain, Bastille and Montmartre

Wow! Thank you Henrike!! Such wonderful suggestions!! I have the Musee d'Orsay on the must see list along with a few others, but didn't think of Claude Monet house & gardens! That may have just been bumped to the short list if I can possibly get there (no car)! I'll be in the city of Paris for a week and a dear friend has introduced me to the most wonderful Parisian who I'm blessed to have as a personal tour guide!! Lot's of time has been left unscheduled so I do love that suggestion! Thank you so much & I look forward to hearing anything else you have to offer! Yes, we should Skype!! xoAmie

Hello, Andy! Thank you for your your comment and I'm so pleased you found my site! How did you happen upon it? Your trip sounds fantastic & can't wait to hear the details. I do hope you'll keep us posted! The orchestration required for your journey makes me feel a bit foolish as my biggest concern, thus far, as been coordinating trains & buses from Heathrow to the English countryside, then back to St Pancris for my Paris train!! lol Well.... that & figuring out how to stay connected on my cell phone & iPad!! Not as easy as I thought... THAT will be a fun post!! Happy travels & look forward to your input in the future! Amie

Many thanks Sita.I think that the hardest part of any undertaking is getting inspired.Once you have inspiration, things seem to fall into place.Adventure cycling 50 somethings are like buses, you wait ages for one , then two turn up.

Thank you, Andy!! Yes, I'm taking the Eurostar from London to Paris & JUST booked my ticket back to London last night! I'm relying heavily on public transportation as I'm not renting a car. You'll be particularly interested in my mode of transport at one particular destination, I hope! PLEASE let us know when your website is up!! I'd be happy to post a link to your page if you'd be open to that! I couldn't agree more that it's all about the inspiration... I think I mentioned in my 1st blog post that, for me, the hardest part was making the decision to go!! You are inspiring many, I'm sure! Happy to have you with us here! Amie

My dear longtime friend and I talked a lot about visiting Edinburgh, Scotland when we turned 50. Alas, that day came and went. We'll go when we are 55, we said. Oops, once again, our plans were thwarted--no time, no money, our savings always eaten up by some emergency. Two years ago, when we turned 60, we wondered if we would ever get to Edinburgh!! Last year, I said to her, Dang, girl we got to make this happen! We are REALLY planning now for the fall of 2015 --no ifs ands or buts about it. We've been saving our money, we've got our passports, we're in contact with some volunteer organizations, ... wish us luck!!

After I get home from England & France, she & I will be crossing the Pond together later this year (more details to follow!) I am SO excited for you two and ask that you PLEASE keep us posted here so we can all share the joy of your big adventure! That's how we INSPIRE one another!! xo Amie

Hi, Jane!!
Thank you so much for the tips!! Musee d'Orsay & the Louvre are "must see's" for me... And I know you must be 100% correct about the Louvre so if I just get to gaze though the glass at the Mona Lisa I'll be thrilled!! The opera house sounds amazing! I'll be a week in Paris so I can add that on! I'm all about the Tower of London & didn't even think about the royal jewel's so thank you for that!! So excited to hear more about your experience & input!! Keep 'em coming!! Amie :)
